Audiodeck is a new audio CD player for Apple CD-ROM player
family. It features nice LCD display, shuffle mode, auto-play, four
distinct types of time display, automatic disc and track name display
using CD-Remote CD database, and many other things. The interface is
intuitive and good looking.
This software is distributed as CD-ware. Please refer to the
documentation for more details...
PS: Version 1.0.3 replace any previous version recently sent to your
archives. Due to a memory bug, version 1.0.0 was somewhat unstable, and
version 1.0.X crashed on data CD. Version 1.0.3 is now more robust if
Color Quick Draw isn't available. I'm sorry for the fuss I caused. And
thanks for your patience...

Subject: [*] binary-pump.cpt.hqx
Ever download a file, only to have it appear as a generic binary file?
If you transfer files with unix, IBM, or VAX systems frequently you've
probably experienced this once or twice. Normally, the solution is to
figure out the correct file type, and then use Resedit or some other
utility and manually change the file type and creator.
Binary Pump is a program which looks at file tags or name extensions in order
to convert them to the correct mac file type and creator. This program is
very
easy and very quick to use--simply drag and drop and it's so fast you might
wonder if it ran at all! Binary Pump will also work for non-Drag and Drop
System 6.0.7 users.
Binary Pump is also very easy to customize and has several features which
allow the user to extract file tag information.

Subject: [*] ColorSwitch 2.3
Version 2.3.0 implements Ambrosia Software's new license code
registration system, which allows registered users to personalize
their copy of ColorSwitch and remove the shareware notices.
ColorSwitch is a Control Panel that allows you to effortlessly switch
between the available color modes of any attached monitors. Instead
of the inconvenience of using the Monitors Control Panel every time
you want to switch between color modes, you can simply hold down the
ColorSwitch modifier keys and click anywhere on the monitor you want
to change. A menu will pop up listing the available color modes for
the monitor you clicked on; just select the color mode you want and
ColorSwitch will acquiesce.
Under System 7 or later, things are even easier: ColorSwitch installs
a Monitor icon-menu next to the Balloon Help menu, from which you can
simply choose the color mode you desire for your main monitor.
ColorSwitch comes in very handy for many day-to-day tasks. Certain
programs require that your monitor be set to a certain color mode in
order to run, and using the Monitors control panel every time you need
to switch color modes grows tiresome quickly. Your Macintosh will
also operate more quickly if you normally operate in black and white
mode, switching to a more colorful setting only when you need to.
ColorSwitch makes switching color modes so quick and convenient, you
will find yourself using it constantly to improve your quality of life
at the computer.
Once installed, ColorSwitch uses up 5K of memory.

Enclosed is a Macintosh RTF file, suitable for posting on an office door
(it's on mine!) of Jabberwocky vs. Tablespoons. These two poems appear
side-by-side for ease in comparison. Jabberwocky was posted here twice.
Mark Lomas posted three typographical corrections, but his version was
missing punctuation and dropped one word ("And" from line 13). The version
here has been carefully compared with the book version, including correct
typographical em-dashes and apostrophes. (Line indentation has not been
preserved, since that made comparison a bit harder.) Tablespoons is the
version posted by Robert McNally, as "recognized" by the Apple Newton, save
that a "recognition" of "through" as "though" on line 17 has been corrected
(I suspect this was a typo on Robert's part; at least I hope so). Robert's
copyright is included.

Subject: [*] Oracle 2.1
Version 2.1.0 implements Ambrosia Software's new license code
registration system, which allows registered users to personalize
their copy of Oracle and remove the shareware notices.
Oracle is a Control Panel that you place into your System Folder.
Oracle will present you with a random thoughtful quotation each time
you start up your computer or once a day, whichever you specify.
Oracle also allows you to print out any quotations that you find of
particular interest, for later contemplation. This could perhaps be
your most practical program for your Macintosh, because it helps to
perfect the most important part of your computer system: you.
Oracle has a library of over 1,000 profound readings, which accounts
for its large size. Although it takes up a fair amount of disk space,
Oracle uses very little system memory (around 5K), and works on any
machine under System 6.0 or later (yes, it is System 7.0 friendly).

Here is RunOSAScript XFCN v.0.72 for HyperCard 2.1, by Donald Olson.
It was originally included on an AppleScript beta CD; it is being
posted and submitted to the net archives with the author's permission.
The XFCN accepts an AppleScript in text form as an argument,
and executes the script if it is valid. It is probably easiest
to write, test, and debug AppleScripts using the Script Editor.
See the stack script and "Execute" button scripts for error checks
and calling syntax. The AppleScript example uses Finder 7.1.3 for
simplicity, but you can use any valid AS commands or scripts that
invoke other AppleScriptable software.
Requires AppleScript and HyperCard 2.1. AppleScript is included
with a tutorial book from BMUG called "The Tao of AppleScript",
ISBN 1-56830-075-1. I've heard that there is another Applescript
book by Danny Goodman that also includes the AppleScript software;
that book may be of interest to people who like Goodman's HyperCard
books, and those who intend to use AS with HC.

Subject: Authoring tool data base -- comic data base
John Brainard wanted a database perhaps to aid construction of comics.
The query is part of a more general problem that I think this forum might
help my incomplete information on, a problem of more general interest, yet
which can work back to help John's specialized interest.
Many years ago I chose Acta for an authoring tool rather than something,
I believe from, Owl Technologies that was not only outliner but hypertext.
By going the cheaper road, I probably missed some good lessons on how to
use hypertext to compose my writing. I believe it was called Owl Technologies
'Guide'.
I have also seen some-
thing for storyboarding and making comics for the mac. I just know that it
existed for the mac and can only give that hope, no further information.
Sorry.
I point out that storyboarding is of multimedia interest to those who don't
know.

Subject: AV Macs and System Update
Here's some questions that I hope some wise soul on the net can probably
answer. I have an 840AV and am wondering whether I should run System
Update 2.0.1 on it. I've noticed that my Memory CP is newer then SU's
(7.1.2 vs 7.1.1), my Express Modem Software is the same (1.1.2), but that
the Sound CP is older (8.0 vs 8.0.1)!
**If you do not have an audiovision monitor, 8.0.1 is only 8.0 + a useless
feature.
So:
1. Will the installer only replace the older stuff?
**The Installer will not even install anything on an 840av, It knows that
HSU 2.0.1 is built into the AVs ROM
2. Also, are other patches installed that aren't as obvious and do these
patches apply to the new AV ROMs?
3. Finally, is the Sound Manager routines built into the AV? (I assume so
since there is no Sound Manager Extension requried).
**Yes, it is built in

Subject: Clarisworks2/ImagewriterII printing problem
Hello,
We have a problem while printing with Clarisworks 2.0 on an
ImageWriter II. It does'nt print on the right of the page for smaller
margins than 1,5 inch. Example: if we ask for a 1 inch margin,
everything is allright on the screen, but the printer uses a 1,5 inch
margin. Same documents printed on Laser printers are o.k.
Documents from other applications with smaller margins are o.k. also.
We tried changing versions of the driver AppletalkImageWriter, but it
did not solve the problem. Finally, we tried with an older version of
Clarisworks (1.0Fv3), and the margin was fine.
Does somebody have a solution for this?

If you're getting
'Out of Memory' messages with a single Disney module, try decreasing
the number of characters in the module.
If you're getting
'Out of Memory' with all Disney modules, it's because you're trying
to run the Disney modules under an older version of After Dark. Disney

Please respond directly, will post summary.
Does anyone know if PPC clock speeds describe the speed of the data BUS as
well as the CPU, or did Motorola succumb the the Intel trick of casually
describing the chip in terms of its internal speed?
My only reason for being skeptical is that many of us know that a 25 MHz '040
would be described in the Intel worlds as a DX2 50, and a 33 MHz '040 as a
DX2 66. It seems suspicious to me that the PPC speeds mentioned happen to be
double the speeds that we see for '040s (66MHz & 80MHz), so I thought I'd
ask.

Strange that AccessPC would have made such a problem...
My problem seems have gone away now - and the only thing that I've

Eric,
I have the my LineLink 144e hooked to an A/B switch and use it
with both a Mac and a PC--no problem. Cable-wise, I have a
combination (ie, mess) of cables and it works contrary to some
discussion that the supplied cable must be used. I am using the
supplied cable in there somewhere, though.
One interesting "feature" however, is that Red Ryder and White
Knight do not connect at any speed. Both packages time out
trying to logon our VAX. However, MacKnowledge and MacKermit
work just fine on the Mac side, as do Kermit and ProComm on the
PC side (9600, our fastest).
This does not address the SmartCom question, but hope it offers
some insight.

Hold on to your $$$. Microsoft Word 6 should be out in January 1994 as will
Excel 5.
And speaking of Microsoft, I'm a bit disgusted with them. I didn't mind paying
$50 for the XL 2.2 to 3.0 upgrade, but I did mind receiving notification in
what seemed a short time after that an upgrade to 4 would be $99. I do much
better if I take advantage of an educational discount and purchase a new
version---not an upgrade.
The announcements of MS Word 6 and XL 5 also seemed to came out shortly after
the current versions were released. I think MS has gone a bit overboard
upgrading its products. Maybe they should have "less featured" versions of
their products. I don't need or want a grammar checker. (IMHO, a paperback
copy
of Strunk & White is the best there is.) Nor do I want an overabundance of
tool
bars; lately, I see more tool bars on the screen than the actual document on
which I'm working. Yuk! Is there a $999 word processor that can make an
omelette in the future?

Subject: Warning: Apple Software Dispatch (extension problem)
[ found on another newsgroup, but I removed "Trojan Horse"
from the Subject-header. otherwise the article is original.
While I do not myself know anything about the problem nor
the symptoms (and extension problems are nothing if not
'a normal experience' for many of us, there are some aspects
of this report which most (potential) users might want to
be aware of BEFORE first using this...
---Werner ]
Warning - Apple Software Dispatch is a Trojan Horse
Apple Software Dispatch is Apple's new way to buy application software.
They send you a CD (mine came unsolicited in the mail). You run an application
on the CD, register your CD by a code that comes with the package, and
then you can call an 800 number to purchase applications on the CD.
You give them a credit card number - they give you some code number that
unlocks/decrypts the application.
While the documentation nowhere says so, THE SOFTWARE DISPATCH APPLICATION
INSTALLS AN EXTENSION IN YOUR SYSTEM. On my system, this extension
clearly conflicted with something, rendering my disks (hard, floppy _and_
CD-ROM) unmountable. Removing the extension fixed the problem. Booting
with Software Dispatch as the only extension also worked, so Software
Dispatch is not inherently buggy - it just suffers from classic Mac
extension conflict problems. However, since this extension is not
mentioned in the documentation, there are people who are in for a rude shock.
And, since the symptoms for this problem are just a dialog saying
"This disk is unreadable on this Macintosh. Would you like to initialize
it?", there are people who are going to waste endless amounts of time,
restoring and rebuilding their disks needlessly. After they do that,
if they still don't notice the Software Dispatch extension, they still
won't have fixed the problem.
I called the Apple Software Dispatch 800 number to report this problem.
After convincing them that I was calling for technical support for
Software Dispatch itself, not an application I purchased through Software
Dispatch, I ended up playing 3 days of phone tag with a support person.
The end result: "We'll report this to a technician. I can't say when they
will get back to you - but it's apt to be a few weeks."
My flames:
* You don't install software on someone's machine without informing
them in documentation and during the installation process.
I _assume_ that the Software Dispatch extension is benign.
I don't _know_ that it is. Indeed, I had to stumble across
its very existence. It's stuff like this that starts ugly
rumors and very, very bad PR.
* If you are in the software distribution and installation business,
you do tech support better than Apple Software Dispatch, especially
given the point above.
* You take reports of "this makes my machine unusable" a little
more seriously, especially when you're launching a new means
of software distribution. Doing otherwise only ends up shooting
yourself in the foot.
I can't believe that I'm the only person to whom this has happened. While
I run a fairly complex Mac, I am relatively conservative about system
extensions - with one or two exceptions, the extensions I have aren't
particularly funky, they're from Apple or 3rd party vendors. I expect that
Apple will be suffering from real grief about this, and, regrettably, they
deserve every little bit of it.

There is also a product call MacX that I=A0don't like as well and has
some very bothersome limitations (IMHO). I=A0don't know how will it
